Thoughts of Living in Happiness: Laughter

- by Della Valenzuela

"I took an acting class at one point. One of the exercises was to laugh for an extended period of time. It was in a room full of strangers and we all began fake and forced laughing. It was embarrassing and uncomfortable. Next the teacher called out types of laughs - "Giggle!" The room filled with giggles. She called out, "Guffaw!" And the place erupted in short bursts of laughter. Next was "Snort!" We all presented our best nasal cavity form of the exercise. No one did it wrong. It was freeing. In the end it was a beautiful way to break the tension, the fear, and provide a happy beginning to what we were doing.

In my everyday life it starts with childish banter, a give and take. We speak in a rhythm, punctuating each other’s humor with a clever addition by you, then one from me. It grows and the laughter builds. These are my favorite people, my everyday people. We share the easiness, the trust and the silliness. My cheeks hurt from smiling. My heart is full. Those are the good moments, the happy ones. I try my best to surround myself with these people whenever possible.

The smiles and the laughter are the extra each day. It is a release. It is a perk. Seek those silly moments. Watch a stupid TV show. Find humor in the little things. Don't let everything get on top of you. Sometimes we get too serious, and forget. Let yourself chuckle. Laugh big and round whenever you get a chance. It will do you well."
